Revolutionary activist and former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has strongly denounced the violent harassment of women and children protesting rising kidnappings outside the Kwara State Government House.
A disturbing viral video circulating on social media captured the moment suspected hired thugs flogged and manhandled the peaceful protesters while uniformed Nigeria Police officers stood by without intervening.
In a statement posted on his official X handle on Monday, December 29, 2025, Sowore described the scene as "one of the most despicable" ever witnessed at a government seat.
"It is especially disturbing that uniformed Nigeria Police officers stood by and watched as helpless women protesters were beaten, harassed, and humiliated in broad daylight," he wrote.
Sowore accused Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of intolerance and authoritarian tendencies, suggesting the attack was either directly ordered or quietly approved by state authorities.
"This descent into violence against women and children is unacceptable in any democracy," he added.
The protesters, mostly women speaking in Yoruba, were seen in tears as they appealed for government intervention amid rampant abductions in their communities.
"They have kidnapped every one of us, both young and old. We are paupers; we have no money, and there is absolutely nothing they can get from us," one woman sobbed in the video.
"Please help us from these kidnappers. They keep abducting our children and husbands."
Sowore demanded swift action from the Nigeria Police Force, calling for the immediate identification and punishment of officers who failed to protect the citizens, as well as the arrest and prosecution of the assailants.
"Anything short of this will confirm official complicity," he warned. As of press time, neither the Kwara State Government nor the Nigeria Police Force has issued any official statement regarding the incident.
