Senate Rejects ‘Bow and Go’ for Ex-CDS Musa Amid Rowdy Protest

A chaotic scene erupted in the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, as lawmakers vehemently opposed granting former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (rtd), the traditional “bow and go” privilege during his screening as a ministerial nominee.

The drama began when Senator Sani Musa (APC, Niger East) moved that the nominee be excused from detailed questioning—a courtesy often extended to former lawmakers or high-ranking public officers.

The motion triggered instant outrage. Several senators rose in protest, shouting “No! No!” as the chamber descended into uproar.

.Senator Garba Maidoki (PDP, Kebbi South) was seen marching angrily toward the podium, insisting that General Musa must face rigorous questioning given the country’s dire security situation.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio quickly intervened, rejecting the “bow and go” request and stressing the need for transparency.“Our constituents want to hear from him directly,” Akpabio said.

“We are asking questions because Nigerians want to ask him questions too.“This is not the time for ‘bow and go’.

Even Donald Trump is on our neck,” he added, referring to international pressure over Nigeria’s security challenges.

He continued: “With over 200 children still in the bush being tortured, let the man give Nigerians hope. It’s not that we don’t like him.”After restoring order, the Senate proceeded with a full screening of the retired four-star general, who is widely expected to be named Minister of Defence.

The rejection marks a rare departure from Senate tradition and reflects growing public frustration with the handling of insurgency, banditry, and mass abductions across the country.
