The Nigerian Senate has mandated the National Security Adviser (NSA) to investigate the spread of false reports claiming that Senate President Godswill Akpabio suffered a medical emergency and was rushed to a hospital in London.
The directive came during Tuesday's plenary session after Senator Titus Zam raised a point of order, highlighting the circulation of misleading stories on various media platforms about Akpabio's alleged health crisis.
Senator Zam condemned the misinformation as unacceptable, calling for the perpetrators to be identified and prosecuted to deter future incidents.
Presiding over the session, Senate President Akpabio acknowledged the growing challenge of regulating media content, especially concerning public figures.
He described some online publications as "garbage in, garbage out," emphasizing the difficulty in curbing irresponsible reporting.
The resolution underscores the Senate's concern over the impact of fake news on public officials and national discourse.
