The House of Representatives has passed a resolution calling on the Federal Ministry of Aviation to immediately slash airport charges and all auxiliary taxes by 50 percent in a bid to bring down the skyrocketing cost of domestic flights ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The motion, moved by Rep. Obinna Aguocha (LP, Abia) and adopted during Thursday’s plenary, seeks urgent government intervention to make air travel affordable for Nigerians during the Yuletide season.
Lawmakers argued that the current high operational charges and multiple taxes imposed on airlines are the primary drivers of exorbitant ticket prices, which have put domestic air travel out of reach for many citizens.
The House further directed the Ministry of Aviation to establish a transparent mechanism to accurately determine airlines’ actual operational costs during the festive period, ensuring that any relief granted translates directly into lower fares for passengers.
In a related development, the lawmakers highlighted the hardship faced by retirees and contributors under the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Pension Fund Limited (NNPC PENSION), who have been experiencing prolonged delays in the payment of pensions and gratuities, and urged relevant authorities to address the issue without further delay.
