The House of Representatives is currently in a closed-door session with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, and the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, to address the mounting crisis of delayed payments to indigenous contractors.
The emergency meeting comes amid sustained protests by local contractors who are owed billions of naira for federal projects completed in 2024.
The aggrieved contractors have accused the Ministry of Finance of withholding verified payments despite repeated appeals, prompting them to take their grievances to the streets and directly demand presidential intervention to clear the huge backlog.
Sources within the National Assembly say lawmakers are pressing the minister and the FIRS boss on the reasons for the prolonged delays and the immediate steps needed to settle the outstanding debts, which have left many indigenous firms on the verge of collapse.
