Pregnant Woman Dies in Katsina Hospital After Cashier Refuses Bank Transfer for Oxygen

A pregnant woman, Aisha Najamu, tragically died at the Turai Umaru Musa Yar’adua Maternity and Children Hospital on Monday night after a cashier allegedly refused to accept a bank transfer for emergency oxygen, insisting on cash payment only.

Eyewitnesses said the critically ill woman arrived at the facility needing urgent oxygen but was denied treatment because she had no physical cash.

One witness recounted: “Someone begged the cashier to accept a transfer, even offered extra money and later a $100 note, but the cashier refused, citing hospital policy. The woman kept crying for help until she passed away around 11:30 p.m. It was deeply distressing.”

Hospital officials confirmed they operate a strict cash-only policy due to Katsina State Treasury Single Account (TSA) guidelines, which prohibit transfers to personal accounts.

The facility also lacks POS machines and has been battling chronic shortages of medical oxygen, often sourcing it from Daura.

Head of Pharmacy, Usman Salisu Wada, acknowledged the oxygen scarcity and suggested the staff member “may have over-adhered” to rules out of fear of sanction.

The hospital’s cashier, Aminu Kofar-Bai, expressed regret, extended condolences, and promised a thorough investigation into any negligence, adding that management would visit the bereaved family.

As of Friday, hospital authorities said they had not received a direct formal complaint from the public, only through a human-rights organisation.
