An Inspector of Police was killed in broad daylight on Friday after gunmen inside a black, unregistered, heavily-tinted Lexus SUV opened fire on officers at a checkpoint in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
CSP Moses Yamu, spokesman of the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the incident occurred around 12 noon when the suspicious vehicle refused to stop despite repeated signals from the patrol team.
“In the course of lawful security checks, one of the occupants suddenly brought out a firearm and shot the Inspector at close range before they sped off,” Yamu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The officer died instantly.Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika has ordered an immediate full-scale investigation and a massive manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
All intelligence and operational units have been mobilised, while security has been stepped up across the state ahead of the Christmas season.
