The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has announced plans to kick off the pension industry health care initiative (PenCare) with a pilot phase targeting 30,000 low-income retirees across Nigeria in March 2026.
Omolola Oloworaran, the PenCom director-general (DG), spoke
at the 2025 PenCom media conference in Lagos on Thursday, according to NAN.
The PenCare initiative is expected to provide free health
insurance for low-income retirees under the contributory pension scheme (CPS)
nationwide.
PenCom had inaugurated the board of trustees (BoT) for
PenCare to drive the industry-wide intervention.
“Retirement should be a season of peace, not a period
defined by anxiety over medical bills,” the DG said.
“I am happy to announce that the pilot will be launched in
March next year, and we hope to enrol about 30,000 retirees across the six
geopolitical zones of the country.”
Oloworaran hailed PenCare as a landmark reform, aligning with the federal government’s ‘renewed hope’ agenda and boosting pensioners’ welfare.
She said the pension industry is being positioned to address
retirees’ social needs beyond monthly benefits.
The DG added that the commission will work with stakeholders
to ensure transparency, sustainability, and equitable access in implementing
the initiative.
