Former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, has formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the PDP’s failure to support him during his legal battles while President Bola Tinubu and APC leaders stood by him.
Metuh, who announced his retirement from partisan politics three years ago, made the declaration on Sunday during a thanksgiving service to mark his 60th birthday in Abuja.
“During my travails, I did not see my party, the PDP. I did not see the people I suffered for,” Metuh told journalists after the event.
“But someone I criticised every week then opposition leader Bola Tinubu sent the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, to visit and comfort me. He did a lot for me when I needed it most.”
The former PDP spokesman revealed that President Tinubu had personally invited him to join the APC on several occasions since 2015, including after the 2023 election victory, but he repeatedly declined until now.
“I have seen the challenges facing the country. As a patriotic Nigerian, I want to join hands with the government at the centre to deliver the dividends of democracy,” he said.
Metuh insisted Nigeria is not sliding into a one-party state, praising opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and David Mark as credible voices who will keep democracy alive.
The defection ceremony was attended by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, ex-governors Okezie Ikpeazu, Sam Egwu, and Ikedi Ohakim, as well as Senators Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye.
Metuh wished the PDP well, saying: “I gave my life to PDP, but I have moved on.”
