Ogun Govt Signs MoU With Investor to Take Over Olumorock Tourism Centre

In a strategic move to boost tourism and internally generated revenue, the Ogun State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Whatadeal Africa, a tourism, lifestyle, and technology company, conceding the management of the historic Olumo Rock Tourist Centre to the private operator.

The agreement was formalised at the Olumo Rock site in Ikija, Abeokuta, where the Honourable Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Sesan Fagbayi, officially handed over operations to Whatadeal.

The partnership aligns with Governor Dapo Abiodun's administration's emphasis on public-private partnerships (PPP) to enhance infrastructure and economic growth.

Commissioner Fagbayi highlighted the necessity of PPPs for development, quoting the adage that "government has no business in business."

He noted that the collaboration would attract more visitors and elevate the site's appeal, building on recent renovations that include elevators, a galleria, restaurants, and adire fabric shops.

Barrister Dapo Oduwole, Director General of Public Private Partnerships, praised the decision, stating that Whatadeal's expertise would bring world-class standards to Olumo Rock, increasing revenue and creating an enabling environment for global investors.

The site recently featured the addition of a Nike Art Gallery outpost, similar to the renowned one in Lekki, Lagos, further enriching its cultural offerings.Speaking on behalf of Whatadeal, Managing Director Obafela (Fela) Bank-Olemoh expressed excitement about managing one of Nigeria's most iconic landmarks.

He committed to transforming Olumo Rock into a must-visit destination, aiming to make it one of the top reasons for international tourists to visit Nigeria.

Bank-Olemoh outlined plans to introduce reality centres, game arcades, fun fairs, advanced visitor tracking for accurate data, and events to drive patronage.

The company targets doubling annual visitors from around 70,000 to over 150,000, positioning Olumo Rock as Nigeria's most visited tourist site.

Olumo Rock, a massive granite outcrop with deep historical significance as a refuge during 19th-century wars, was renovated and reopened earlier in 2025 under Governor Abiodun's ISEYA agenda to promote tourism.
