The National Universities Commission (NUC) has received an initial €3 million from the French Development Agency (AFD) to kick-start major Information and Communication Technology (ICT) upgrade projects in ten selected Nigerian universities.
The funds represent the first disbursement of a $40 million loan facility aimed at modernising digital infrastructure, enhancing teaching and research capabilities, and streamlining administrative processes across the nation’s higher education sector.
NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, announced the release during the inaugural meeting of the 13th NUC Board in Abuja.
Professor Ribadu said the Commission, since his assumption of office, has prioritised research-driven reforms, entrepreneurship development, digital transformation, and skills enhancement to reposition Nigerian universities for global competitiveness.
The new Board outlined five strategic pillars that will guide its tenure:
- Performance evaluation of universities
- Improving Nigeria’s global university rankings
- Expanding digital literacy and infrastructure
- Strengthening research output
- Driving far-reaching institutional reforms
The ICT projects are expected to deliver faster internet connectivity, upgraded e-learning platforms, digital libraries, and smart campus solutions in the first batch of beneficiary institutions.
