The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the Federal College of Education (FCE), Yola, to independently run degree programmes under the new dual mandate policy, allowing the institution to award bachelor's degrees alongside its traditional National Certificate in Education (NCE).
Provost Dr. Mohammed Dagereji announced the development during a press conference in Yola on Wednesday. He revealed that FCE Yola is one of 15 federal colleges of education selected by the federal government to operate full degree programmes without requiring affiliation to any university.
The college plans to launch 14 degree programmes out of 38 that have received NUC approval. Previously, since 2014, these degrees were offered in affiliation with the University of Maiduguri.
The first batch of students to benefit from the independent programme will be admitted for the 2026/2027 academic session.Dr. Dagereji urged the federal government to further harmonise NCE and degree programmes, enabling them to run as a seamless, continuous course.
He confirmed that FCE Yola is now listed on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal and encouraged prospective students to apply.
Those interested in transferring to the college can do so via the institution's website at https://fceyoladegree.com.ng/portal/application.Candidates are advised to select only from the 14 approved programmes when applying or changing courses at any JAMB-accredited centre.
Applications for unapproved programmes will not be processed at this stage. This approval aligns with the broader implementation of the Federal Colleges of Education Act 2023, empowering select institutions to enhance teacher education and expand access to higher qualifications in Nigeria.
