No Court Order Stops Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement, Nigeria Police Insist

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reiterated that no court has issued an order restraining it from enforcing the tinted glass permit policy, dismissing circulating claims as a misinterpretation of a judicial directive to maintain the status quo.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, made the clarification on Tuesday during a media briefing at the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office in Abuja, where operatives paraded suspects and recovered arms.

Hundeyin explained that the widely circulated court order merely instructed parties to maintain the status quo at the time it was issued when enforcement was already ongoing and did not suspend or halt the policy.

He emphasized that the previous suspension was a discretionary decision by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following consultations with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), not a result of any judicial restraint.

"The suspension was not based on any court order but was a responsible response to public concerns and appeals," Hundeyin said, adding that prolonged pauses have allowed criminals to exploit unauthorised tinted vehicles for crimes, including a recent incident in Edo State where occupants of a tinted SUV allegedly killed a police inspector during a chase.

During the briefing, the NPF paraded nine suspects arrested in intelligence-led operations across several states for alleged involvement in armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, gunrunning, and drug trafficking.

Seven major cases were resolved, with recovered exhibits including two AK-47 rifles, three pump-action rifles, two single-barrel guns, two Beretta pistols, four locally fabricated revolvers, six live cartridges, four magazines, 35 rounds of live ammunition, and quantities of illicit drugs.

Hundeyin assured Nigerians of robust security measures ahead of the festive season, including heightened patrols, surveillance, and deployment of rapid response units on highways and in major cities to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The clarification comes amid tensions with the NBA, which has threatened contempt proceedings against the IGP over plans to resume full enforcement from January 2, 2026, arguing it disregards ongoing court cases challenging the policy's legality.

The police maintain enforcement will proceed professionally until a final court ruling.
