The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans for widespread protests across the nation on December 17. The declaration underscores growing frustration with banditry, kidnappings, and the government's perceived inaction, particularly in protecting vulnerable schoolchildren.
The announcement came in an official notice dispatched to all state councils on December 10, following a heated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on December 4. In the communiqué, the NLC lambasted the unchecked rise in criminal activities by bandits and kidnappers, which have terrorized communities from urban centers to remote villages.
At the heart of the outcry is the harrowing November 17 abduction of female students from a boarding school in Kebbi State, a brazen attack that has ignited national fury. The NLC highlighted the shocking withdrawal of security personnel from the school just hours before the raid, labeling it a "dastardly and criminal" oversight that reeks of negligence.
"The surge in kidnappings targeting schoolchildren has reached an alarming and unacceptable level," the statement declared, demanding swift investigations and prosecutions for those responsible for the security lapse.
The labor powerhouse accused the federal government of falling short on its duty to safeguard educational institutions, especially those on the outskirts of towns or in isolated regions. "The NEC-in-Session is concerned that the government has not done enough to secure all the schools to stop attacks on innocent pupils and students and their teachers," the document stated pointedly.
To amplify their message, the NLC has issued a clarion call to action: All affiliates and state councils must "fully mobilize" workers, unions, and civil society groups for the December 17 demonstrations.
The protests aim to pressure authorities into bolstering school security, rooting out corruption in protective measures, and restoring public confidence in the nation's safety net.
