Nigerian Leaders Treat Public Office as Family Business - Sanusi

Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano and former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, has accused the country’s political elite of deliberately sabotaging national progress by running public office as a personal and family enterprise rather than a service to citizens.

Delivering a keynote address on Wednesday at the 15th anniversary of Enough is Enough (EiE) Nigeria in Lagos, Sanusi declared: “We have done enough damage and maybe we need to stop.”

He argued that many opportunities for development have not merely been missed but intentionally squandered because those in power prioritise “themselves, their families, and people close to them” over the nation and its people.

“Public office is about themselves, it’s about their families, it’s about people close to them, not about the country or the citizens,” the Emir said.Sanusi urged Nigerian youth to reject the dysfunctional system “manufactured” for them, one rooted in ethnic rivalries, religious conflicts, and personal enrichment, and instead unite to build a nation that fulfils its vast potential.

“The nation belongs to us. It does not belong to the government, it does not belong to politicians; it belongs to us,” he emphasised.

He called on citizens, especially the younger generation, to come together across all divides and articulate a clear, achievable vision for a different Nigeria.“We need a Nigeria different from the one that has been manufactured for us, a Nigeria of ethnic rivalries, religious conflicts, race-seeking, competition for aggrandizement,” Sanusi said. “It has to be a country that realises its potential in the committee of nations.”

His remarks come amid growing frustration over governance, economic hardship, and the concentration of power and wealth among a narrow political class.
