New tax law will commence on January 1 - Tinubu

The Presidency has confirmed that the new tax laws, including those enacted on June 26, 2025, and the remaining acts scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, will proceed as planned.

In a statement released on December 30, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described the reforms as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive and robust fiscal foundation” for Nigeria. He emphasised that the tax laws are not aimed at increasing taxes, but are intended to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and strengthen the social contract while protecting citizens’ dignity.

President Tinubu urged all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, noting that the process is now firmly in the delivery stage. He addressed public concerns over alleged changes to certain provisions of the recently enacted tax laws, stating that “no substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process.”

“Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures,” he added.

The President reiterated the administration’s commitment to due process and the integrity of enacted laws, pledging to work with the National Assembly to swiftly resolve any issues that may arise.

He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains focused on a tax system that promotes prosperity and shared responsibility.

The statement was signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
