Navy Rescues 20 Crew Members from Burning Cargo Vessel in Calabar Channel

The Nigerian Navy successfully rescued 20 crew members from the cargo vessel MV Chimba Express after a fire broke out onboard along the Calabar Channel on Monday, December 22, 2025.

The vessel, en route from Gabon to Calabar carrying scrap materials and other logistics, issued a distress call around 1:00 p.m.

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) OSE, on routine patrol, responded promptly. Upon arrival, personnel observed thick smoke billowing from the ship, with some crew members having jumped overboard and others stranded on deck.

A coordinated rescue effort involving NNS OSE, Naval Security Station 030, Forward Operating Base Ibaka, and local support saved all 20 individuals, who received immediate first aid. The crew consisted of 21 people in total, 14 Nigerians and 7 Cameroonians.

The missing Chief Engineer reportedly jumped into the water fearing an explosion, and search operations continue.

The operation highlights the Nigerian Navy's commitment to maritime safety under the leadership of Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, aimed at building a professional force to secure Nigeria's waters.
