The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to the public about the widespread circulation of fake K!ss brand c*ndoms, urging Nigerians to exercise extreme caution when purchasing the product.
In a public alert (No. 042/2025) released on Monday, NAFDAC revealed that counterfeit versions of the popular male latex cond*ms have been detected in several major markets, including Onitsha Market (Anambra), Idumota Market and Trade Fair Market (Lagos), as well as markets in Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, Enugu, and other locations across the country.
The alert stemmed from information provided by DKT International Nigeria, the authorised marketer of K!ss c*ndoms, a brand designed to prevent unintended pregnancies and protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV, gonorrhoea, and syphilis.
NAFDAC emphasised that the counterfeit cond0ms pose grave health risks due to substandard manufacturing, including poor quality latex, lack of proper sterilisation, inadequate lubrication, incorrect labelling, and non-compliance with regulatory standards.
Users of fake c*ndoms face heightened dangers of breakage, infections, allergic reactions, and ineffective protection, potentially leading to unintended pregnancies or STI transmission.
To help consumers identify genuine products, NAFDAC highlighted key differences:
Packaging: Fake boxes are darker in colour, with distorted or darker images; some interiors are plain white without a condom image; side panels lack additional information; manufacturer address is often incorrect (e.g., "42, Montgomery Road, Yaba, Lagos") or incomplete; missing storage and caution instructions.
Condom itself: Counterfeits use thinner latex, have smaller teat ends, less lubrication, and are rounder in shape compared to the larger, oval-shaped, well-lubricated genuine versions.
The agency has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance and remove the falsified products from circulation.
NAFDAC advised the public to buy cond0ms only from reputable sources, inspect packaging carefully, and report suspicious items to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Healthcare providers, distributors, and consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant to safeguard public health amid ongoing efforts to combat counterfeit medical products.
