Massive Fire Engulfs Section of FIRS Headquarters in Abuja

A fierce fire broke out this afternoon at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) headquarters in Abuja, sending thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky and sparking widespread panic among staff and nearby residents.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames erupting from one section of the multi-storey building located in the Wuse Zone area, with videos and photos quickly circulating on social media showing the blaze raging as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Firefighters from the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service were deployed promptly, battling to contain the inferno amid chaotic scenes of evacuation. As of now, there are no confirmed reports of casualties, though unverified accounts suggest staff were safely evacuated.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the extent of the damage or whether sensitive documents were affected.

Sources close to the building described the outbreak as starting suddenly, with some speculating electrical faults as a possible trigger, a common issue in many Nigerian public buildings.

Online reactions have been swift and cynical, with many Nigerians joking darkly about "mysterious fires" in government offices, especially those handling financial records.

Comments ranged from quips about "balancing the books" to outright suspicions of foul play amid ongoing debates over tax reforms.

This incident comes as FIRS continues to push aggressive revenue collection drives under the current administration.

Officials are expected to provide updates soon as efforts to fully extinguish the fire continue. The situation is developing, and emergency teams remain on high alert.
