Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed profound grief over the sudden death of Bayelsa State's Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, calling it a "painful and sad loss" to both the state and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Ewhrudjakpo, a dedicated public servant and loyal party stalwart, collapsed unexpectedly at the Government House in Yenagoa on Thursday afternoon and was pronounced dead shortly after, sending shockwaves through political circles in the South-South region.
In a heartfelt statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, from Ibadan, Governor Makinde extended his deepest condolences to the late deputy's immediate family, the Bayelsa State Government, its resilient people, and the broader PDP family.
The Oyo helmsman, who received the tragic news on Thursday, eulogized Ewhrudjakpo as a "courageous democrat" whose unwavering commitment to loyalty and democratic principles often came at personal cost. "His death is painful and it is a sad loss to the state he served till his last breath and to us in the PDP, as he was a faithful party man who chose loyalty and commitment to democracy above personal gains," Makinde stated.
He further prayed for divine comfort, urging, "I express my heartfelt condolences to his family, the Government and the good people of Bayelsa State and pray to God to grant repose to his soul. I also pray that God will give his immediate family and the state the fortitude to bear the loss. Good night, courageous democrat!"
The mourning has reverberated across Nigeria's political landscape. The South-South Governors’ Forum and the PDP were quick to pay tribute on Thursday, highlighting Ewhrudjakpo's role as a dependable ally and bridge-builder.
State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, echoed the sentiments in his own statement, commiserating with Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri, whom he described as having lost "a dependable ally," while extending sympathies to the bereaved family and friends.
Ewhrudjakpo's passing marks a significant blow to Bayelsa State's leadership and the PDP's ranks in the Niger Delta, where he was known for his advocacy on key regional issues. Tributes continue to pour in, underscoring his legacy as a steadfast servant of the people.
