In a significant blow to criminal elements operating in Kogi State, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has announced the successful recovery of a large stockpile of arms and ammunition from hidden criminal enclaves during a coordinated joint security operation.
Speaking to journalists in Lokoja on Tuesday, Governor Ododo revealed that the raid was the culmination of over a week of intensive, intelligence-led surveillance and collaboration between security agencies and the state government.
The operation, described by the governor as a "major strategic breakthrough," uncovered a substantial arsenal, including 24 AK-47 rifles, 23 pump-action rifles, one Tavor rifle, one FN rifle, four Barrett pistols, four Browning rifles, 42 magazines, 520 rounds of GPMG 7.62mm ammunition, and large quantities of AK-47 rounds along with cartridges for pump-action and Barrett pistols.
Although no arrests were made as the suspects fled the site, Ododo emphasized that the seizure disrupts criminal logistics and marks a turning point in the state's fight against banditry and kidnapping.
He attributed ongoing security challenges partly to Kogi's geographic position, bordering ten states and serving as a key transit corridor.
The governor credited the success to enhanced synergy among security forces, inspired by recent directives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intensify efforts against crime.
He extended gratitude to federal security leaders, including the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Chiefs of Defence, Army, Naval Staff, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Ododo urged residents to continue providing timely intelligence to security agencies, reaffirming his administration's commitment to protecting lives and property while vowing sustained aggressive action against criminal networks.
