Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has officially inaugurated 83 newly upgraded primary healthcare centres (PHCs) across the state, marking a major milestone in efforts to enhance accessible and quality healthcare services for residents, particularly in rural areas.
The symbolic unveiling took place on Monday at the Oloje Primary Healthcare Centre in Ilorin, where the governor emphasised that the facilities represent a new era in the state's health sector.
"As I formally unveil these 83 newly revitalised primary health care facilities today, I do so with the conviction that we are writing a new chapter in the health history of our state," he stated.
The projects, funded through a collaboration involving the Kwara State Government, the World Bank-supported IMPACT (Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transformation) project, Basic Healthcare Provision Funds, and Leadership Challenge Funds secured by the state, include comprehensive renovations, modern equipment, solar power installations, staff quarters, and potable water supply.
Of the 83 facilities, 70 were supported primarily by the IMPACT project, with the remaining 13 funded through other sources. All have been elevated to Level 2 PHC standards, enabling them to offer expanded services.
Governor AbdulRazaq noted that his administration inherited a severely dilapidated PHC system but refused to accept it as the status quo.
Through partnerships and prompt counterpart funding, the state has transformed these centres to bridge the urban-rural healthcare gap.
Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (KWSPHCDA), Prof. Nusirat Elelu, highlighted improved health outcomes, including over 722,000 outpatient visits and more than 30,000 deliveries recorded in recent years, compared to just 8,020 in 2020.
The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Muyi Aina, praised the governor for effectively utilising the IMPACT project to drive tangible improvements.
Community leaders and stakeholders expressed gratitude, noting that the upgrades will significantly boost local access to essential services.
The initiative aligns with broader reforms, including recent recruitment of over 1,000 healthcare workers, underscoring the administration's commitment to universal health coverage.
