Kidnappers have contacted families of the 28 travellers abducted in Wase Local Government Area, demanding ₦1.5 million ransom for each victim, regardless of age or gender.
The victims, men, women, children, including offspring of traditional rulers and a religious leader were seized on the night of December 21 while travelling from Zak village to Sabon Layi community in Bashar District to attend a Maulud celebration marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
Gunmen ambushed their vehicle near the community, forcing passengers into the bush and abandoning the vehicle, which belongs to the Zak village head and was discovered the following morning.
A relative of one victim, Ibrahim Musa, confirmed the ransom demand to reporters, saying the kidnappers called on Monday night and assured the victims were safe but insisted on payment.
He pleaded for reduction, citing the families' poverty and the inclusion of many teenagers.
The Plateau State Police Command has deployed operatives to the scene and is intensifying efforts to rescue the victims and arrest the perpetrators.
Local residents have decried the surge in kidnappings, banditry, and cattle rustling in Wase LGA, urging stronger security patrols on rural roads, especially during religious events.
No group has claimed responsibility, and the victims remain in captivity as negotiations appear ongoing.
This incident adds to Nigeria's persistent challenge of ransom-driven abductions in insecure regions.
