Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection was formalized on Wednesday when Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Katung's resignation letter from the PDP during plenary session in the Nigerian Senate.
Although Katung had initially announced his intention to switch parties via social media on November 1, citing the need for better alignment with developmental efforts in his constituency and consultations with stakeholders, the move was only officially recognized in the Senate today.
In his letter, Katung described the PDP as "fractured" due to prolonged leadership crises, stating that the party no longer aligned with the aspirations of his constituents or guaranteed effective representation.
He emphasized that joining the APC would allow him to better serve Kaduna South and contribute to national progress.
The defection further strengthens the APC's majority in the Senate and reflects ongoing political realignments amid internal challenges within the PDP.
Katung, a barrister and longtime politician from Southern Kaduna, has pledged continued focus on unity, security, and development in his district.
