Kaduna Govt Turns Free Bus Scheme into Permanent Relief for Citizens

The Kaduna State Government has announced the indefinite extension of its popular free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit scheme.

The decision, approved by Governor Uba Sani, comes after a glowing performance review that highlighted the program's transformative effects on daily commuters.

Launched earlier this year, the initiative deploys 100 eco-friendly CNG-powered buses across 200 designated stops in the state capital and surrounding areas.

What began as a temporary measure to ease the financial strain from rising fuel costs has now evolved into a cornerstone of the state's social welfare efforts.

From July to November 2025 alone, the buses ferried over 1.4 million passengers, delivering daily relief to more than 18,000 riders and collectively saving families an estimated ₦1.39 billion in transport expenses.

The extension was greenlit following a comprehensive assessment report and on-the-ground feedback from users.

During recent field visits, officials noted the palpable gratitude from riders, who praised the scheme for making essentials like school runs, work commutes, and market trips far more affordable.

"This is not just about moving people; it's about moving lives forward," said Kaduna State Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, in an official statement. "These are not just numbers. They represent school fees paid, food on the table, small businesses staying afloat, and thousands of our citizens moving daily without the burden of transport costs."

Governor Sani echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the human element behind the policy.

"The relief on the faces of our people and the gratitude in their voices remind us that leadership must always reduce the burdens of ordinary citizens," he stated.

"For this reason, I have approved the indefinite continuation of the Free CNG Mass Transit Scheme."

Hailed as one of the administration's most successful interventions, the program aligns with Kaduna's broader push for sustainable urban mobility.

Looking ahead, the government vows to scale up operations, investing further in green infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable, and environmentally conscious travel options for all residents.
