Tinubu Nominates Former Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, as Minister of Defence


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded the name of General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), to the Senate for confirmation as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.


The nomination, contained in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, comes two days after the resignation of the former Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar.


General Musa, 58, stepped down as Chief of Defence Staff in October 2025 after serving in the position since June 2023. A seasoned infantry officer with over three decades of military service, he is widely recognised for his leadership in counter-insurgency operations in the North-East and multinational efforts around the Lake Chad region.


Born on 25 December 1967 in Sokoto, General Musa began his military career at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1991. 


His distinguished career includes key command and staff appointments such as:Commanding Officer, 73 Battalion   

Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai (2021)   

Commander, Sector 3 Multinational Joint Task Force, Lake Chad Region

Commander, Nigerian Army Infantry Corps

 

In 2012, he received the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering.President Tinubu, in the nomination letter, expressed full confidence in General Musa’s wealth of experience and leadership, stating that he possesses the requisite expertise to steer the Ministry of Defence and further bolster Nigeria’s national security framework.


The Senate is expected to commence screening of the nominee in the coming days.
