All federal lawmakers from Imo State, led by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere (Ideato North/South Federal Constituency), have thrown their full weight behind the proposed creation of Anim State, which would become the sixth state in Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone.
In a joint press statement issued Wednesday, the lawmakers announced that they unanimously adopted Anim State as their consensus choice following an exhaustive meeting held Tuesday night in Abuja.
Hon. Ugochinyere, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, described the proposal as a “long-overdue demand” that carries substantial economic benefits, particularly in gas production and sustainable development.
The new state is to be carved out of parts of present-day Anambra and Imo States, with the Ideato area designated as a senatorial zone.
“This proposal represents the fulfillment of an old agitation from the original Imo and Anambra blocks,” Ugochinyere said.
“It is rooted in history, driven by equity, and strengthened by clear economic advantages for our people and the nation.”
The lawmaker expressed profound gratitude to Senator Osita Izunaso and other Imo federal legislators for the weeks of consultations that produced the harmonized position, declaring that “the search is finally over.”
He called on colleagues across the National Assembly to support the bill, urging South-East unity above personal or political ambitions.“
The East has spoken with one voice,” he added. “We now look forward to the support of our brothers and sisters from other zones so that this legitimate demand sees the light of day.”
The Anim State proposal is one of several state creation bills currently before the National Assembly as the House of Representatives begins the process of altering the 1999 Nigerian Constitution.
The South-East remains the only geopolitical zone with five states, a disparity Igbo leaders have long described as inequitable.
