A special monitoring unit dispatched by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, arrived in Anambra State on Monday to oversee the immediate withdrawal of police personnel attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) for escort and guard duties.
The team was formally received at the state police command headquarters in Awka by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu.Speaking during the reception, CP Orutugu disclosed:
“The Anambra Police Command today, December 8, formally receives operatives of the IGP monitoring unit deployed to the state to ensure full implementation of the IGP’s directive on the withdrawal of police personnel from VIP escort and guard duties.”
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement issued shortly after the event, said the CP reaffirmed the command’s total commitment to the IGP’s reform agenda aimed at restoring professionalism, discipline, and optimal deployment of manpower.
“The withdrawal of these officers and men will significantly strengthen public policing, improve rapid response capacity, and ensure more personnel are available for core policing duties across Anambra State,” Ikenga stated.
He added that CP Orutugu has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical Units to provide every necessary support to the monitoring team for a seamless and transparent enforcement process.
The command also appealed to all affected individuals, corporate organizations, and VIPs in the state to comply fully with the directive.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that IGP Kayode Egbetokun recently ordered the nationwide withdrawal of police officers from VIP protection duties following a spate of attacks on places of worship, schools, and soft targets across the country.
The move is intended to free thousands of personnel currently tied down in private security details for redeployment to general crime-fighting and public safety operations.
Anambra becomes one of the first states to receive the IGP monitoring team since the directive was issued last week, signaling the seriousness with which the police high command is pursuing the reform.
More states are expected to host similar teams in the coming days as the nationwide exercise gathers momentum.
