Nigeria's state-owned carrier, Ibom Air, is poised to begin international flight operations in April 2026 from the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The announcement was made by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, following an inspection of the airport's facilities on Wednesday.
Accompanied by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, Keyamo met with representatives from key agencies, including Customs, Quarantine, Nigeria Immigration Service, NDLEA, Police, DSS, NEMA, and various aviation bodies.Keyamo expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting that the state has exceeded expectations in preparing for international status.
"From all we have heard, Akwa Ibom State is ahead of the plan scheduled. We thought the gaps to be closed would be much, but they are virtually very small gaps. Akwa Ibom State has gone ahead of schedule to a full-blown International Airport," he said.
A highlight of the inspection was the new Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility, which Keyamo described as essential for international operations.
"This facility allows international airlines to conduct routine checks before departing. It is one of the standard requirements of any International Airport," he added.
Governor Eno thanked Keyamo for his dedication to aviation development and President Bola Tinubu for approving upgrades and funding.
He also acknowledged the foundational work of previous state leaders. The development builds on the recent upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport to full international status, paving the way for enhanced connectivity, tourism, and economic growth in the South-South region.
Ibom Air, wholly owned by the Akwa Ibom State Government, currently operates domestic routes and is expanding its fleet to support the upcoming international services.
