Gunmen K!ll Two Police Inspectors in Enugu Ambush, Seize Rifles

Unknown gunmen suspected to be operatives of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN), ambushed a police patrol team in Enugu on December 27, 2025, killing two inspectors and carting away three AK-47 rifles.

The attack occurred around 8:30 p.m. along Zik Avenue, near Good Shepherd Specialist Hospital, when six armed assailants in an ash-coloured Lexus RX 350 SUV opened fire on a Distress Response Squad (DRS) patrol Hilux vehicle before setting it ablaze.

The deceased officers were identified as Inspectors Valentine Iheme and Ani Anayo, both attached to the DRS team.

The attackers escaped with three AK-47 rifles, each loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition.

Security sources told counter-insurgency monitor Zagazola Makama that the Enugu State Police Command has mobilised all tactical units and assets in a manhunt aimed at apprehending the suspects, neutralising any threat, and recovering the stolen weapons.

Police authorities have condemned the attack and vowed to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The incident comes amid ongoing concerns over sporadic violence attributed to separatist elements in the South-East region, despite IPOB's repeated denials of involvement in such attacks.

No group has officially claimed responsibility, and investigations are ongoing.
