Governor Mutfwang Finalising Defection to APC Before January 2026

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang is in the final stages of defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), multiple high-level sources have confirmed to news men.

The move, described as “irreversible,” is expected to be formally completed before the end of January 2026.Sources within the governor’s inner circle disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has personally met with Mutfwang and given his blessing to the planned defection.

The governor’s decision comes amid the PDP’s deepest crisis in its 26-year history, marked by bitter factional battles and the recent exits of several high-profile members.

However, the development has sparked resistance within the Plateau chapter of the APC, particularly from members who themselves defected from the PDP in recent years.

Some of these aggrieved stakeholders are reportedly threatening to return to the PDP if Mutfwang is admitted into the ruling party. To smooth the process, APC National Chairman Dr Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, a Plateau indigene, has been holding series of reconciliation meetings with the dissenting voices.

In October 2025, during a public event at the Government House Banquet Hall in Jos, Governor Mutfwang had publicly acknowledged mounting pressure to join the APC, stating:

“Only two people can authorise me to change my party, God and the good people of Plateau. Have you asked me to go anywhere?” The crowd responded with a resounding “No!”

Those consultations have now reached an advanced stage, with the governor said to have made up his mind.

Mutfwang’s expected defection follows a wave of PDP governors switching to the APC or smaller parties:Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara formally joined the APC on Tuesday

Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke defected to Accord Party on Tuesday.

Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas is widely expected to complete his move to the APC soon

If Mutfwang joins, the APC will control 21 of Nigeria’s 36 states, further consolidating its dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The states still outside APC control would shrink to: Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Kano, Osun, Oyo, Taraba and Zamfara.
