Gov Uba Sani Enhances Teachers' Welfare, Extends Retirement Age to 65

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has approved significant improvements to teachers' service conditions, including extending the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65 years and increasing the maximum years of service from 35 to 40, effective August 1, 2025.

The policy also introduces a special rural posting allowance for teachers deployed to remote and hard-to-reach areas, aimed at encouraging service in underserved communities.

In a statement issued on December 19, 2025, the state's Commissioner for Information, Mallam Ahmed Maiyaki, explained that the measures align with the federal Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act of 2022.

This national law exempts teachers from the standard public service retirement limits, acknowledging their vital contribution to nation-building.

Governor Sani views experienced educators as essential for delivering high-quality education and maintaining strong learning outcomes.

"This policy honors dedicated service, retains valuable expertise in classrooms, and boosts productivity for the benefit of our children and Kaduna's future," Maiyaki quoted the governor as saying.

A circular signed by the Permanent Secretary (Establishment), Mrs. Felicia I. Makama, has been distributed to relevant institutions for immediate compliance, with detailed guidelines to follow from the State Civil Service Commission.

The commissioner expressed confidence that these reforms will enhance teacher motivation, improve retention rates, and elevate educational standards statewide, showing the administration's focus on worker welfare and human capital investment.
