Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has approved full scholarship payments for a historic 28,346 indigenous students studying in universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
In a landmark move, the governor also approved a 100% increase in all scholarship categories, effectively doubling the monthly allowances students receive to cushion the impact of rising living and educational costs.
Breakdown of the new doubled allowances:
- PhD, Master’s and PGDE students: ₦110,000 (previously ₦55,000)
- Undergraduate degree students: ₦46,000 (previously ₦23,000)
- HND, NCE and ND students: ₦34,000 (previously ₦17,000)
- Diploma, Certificate and Consultancy programmes: ₦26,000 (previously ₦13,000)
Yobe State University tops the beneficiary list with 7,636 students, followed by students in federal and state-owned institutions nationwide.
Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Scholarship Board, Dr. Kagu Abubakar, described the intervention as one of the largest single-state educational support packages in Nigeria’s recent history, reaffirming Governor Buni’s priority on human capital development and youth empowerment.
To guarantee transparency and seamless disbursement, the Board recently held a stakeholders’ meeting with members of the State House of Assembly Committee on Higher Education, Ministry officials, student leaders and focal persons.
A detailed disbursement timetable will soon be released, while beneficiaries’ details will be verified and forwarded to their respective institutions.
Dr. Kagu thanked Governor Buni on behalf of students, parents and guardians, noting that the consistent scholarship scheme has significantly reduced dropout rates and expanded access to tertiary education for indigent families across Yobe State.
Updates on the exercise will be provided regularly through official channels to ensure accountability and timely delivery.
