Four officers attached to the 18 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron escaped death on Friday morning when their patrol Toyota Hilux veered off the road and somersaulted several times along the ever-busy Yelwata–Makurdi highway in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The lone accident happened at about 9:10 a.m. while the team, led by driver Cpl. Augustine Garba, was conducting routine patrol duties along the volatile axis.
Eyewitnesses told Zagazola Makama that the vehicle suddenly lost control, plunged into the bush, and rolled multiple times before coming to a halt.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Yelwata quickly mobilised tactical units and rescue teams to the scene. All four injured officers were swiftly evacuated and rushed to the Police Clinic, Makurdi, for immediate treatment.
Three of the policemen were treated for minor injuries and discharged the same day, while the fourth officer, who sustained more serious bruises, remains on admission but is in stable condition, police sources confirmed.
The Benue State Police Command has launched an internal investigation to establish the exact cause of the crash whether mechanical failure, excessive speed, or road conditions and to review adherence to safety protocols during patrols.
The incident comes barely 24 hours after police in the state arrested a notorious bandit linked to the killing of officers along the same Yelwata corridor.
