Senate President Godswill Akpabio has claimed that opposition ranks in the Nigerian Senate have shrunk dramatically since the start of the 10th Assembly, leaving only a handful of non-APC senators.
Speaking at an APC caucus meeting on Thursday, Akpabio recounted: "When we came in, the opposition had almost 50 members (senators), but today, when I counted, there are about 5 or 4 left in the opposition. Even those 5 members have whispered to me that I should take them to the president as they are prepared to join the APC."
The Senate President's remarks highlight the ongoing wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which began with around 59 seats in 2023 but has grown significantly through cross-carpeting by lawmakers from parties like the PDP and Labour Party.
Akpabio expressed a preference for maintaining some opposition presence, noting he had allowed certain senators who aligned with APC locally to remain in minority roles to avoid empty benches. His comments come amid criticism from opposition figures over the shrinking diversity in the upper chamber.
Recent defections, including that of a PDP senator announced just days ago, have further solidified APC dominance in the 109-member Senate.
