Unknown gunmen opened fire on a group of Fulani herders at a Conoil filling station along Bukuru Expressway in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday evening, injuring five people.
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) confirmed the incident, with its Plateau State Chairman, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, stating that eight herders were traveling in a J5 open-body vehicle returning from Kara Cattle Market in Bukuru when the attack occurred around 6-7:30 pm.
According to Babayo, three gunmen on a motorcycle, who had been trailing the vehicle, stormed the station while the herders were buying fuel, shot at them, and fled the scene.
The victims sustained bullet wounds, including fractures, and were initially taken to Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) but transferred to Potters Specialist Hospital due to an ongoing strike at the government facility.
Deputy Chairman of Kara Market, Dauda Adam Ciroma, described the assault as "deadly" and praised police from B Division for promptly arriving at the scene and assisting in evacuating the injured.Babayo labeled the attack "unprovoked," emphasizing that the herders were targeted simply for being Fulani.
He warned of a "dangerous trend" threatening the safety of herders in communities, grazing fields, and markets across the state. While urging members to remain calm and avoid retaliation believing the attacks aim to provoke them MACBAN called on security agencies to investigate, arrest the perpetrators, and address the rising insecurity.
Spokespersons for the Plateau State Police Command and Operation Enduring Peace have not yet commented on the incident.
The attack comes amid ongoing tensions in Plateau State, with recent reports of cattle rustling and other violence affecting pastoral communities.
