FG Revalidates Ondo Deep Seaport Licence After Two-Year Delay Over Naming Error

The Federal Government has revalidated the operating licence for the Ondo Deep Seaport, ending a two-year setback caused by a naming discrepancy in the original approval document.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, formally presented the revalidated certificate to Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in Abuja. The initial licence was approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2023 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, progress stalled due to an error where the licence was issued in the name of a prospective partner rather than the correct entity representing the state and investors, necessitating a fresh submission and comprehensive business case.

Oyetola described the revalidation as a "strategic intervention" to harness Ondo State's maritime potential, emphasising its role in diversifying Nigeria's economy.

"The Ondo Deep Sea Port is not just a project for Ondo State; it is a national asset that will strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness in global shipping, reduce pressure on existing ports, and create a new hub for exports, manufacturing, and job creation," Oyetola said.

He added that the facility, located along the Atlantic corridor, would boost non-oil exports, improve ease of doing business, attract foreign direct investment, and position Ondo as a key player in the blue economy.Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the FEC for the approval, calling it a "turning point" for the state.

"This revalidated certificate validates our vision for industrial growth, job creation, and sustainable development anchored on our long coastline and maritime assets," Aiyedatiwa stated.

He noted that his administration is prioritising supporting infrastructure, including roads and facilities, to complement the port project. The deep seaport is expected to catalyse trade, industrialisation, and regional integration, serving as a major gateway for global maritime activities.
