The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly denied allegations of planning to unlawfully target opposition politicians, dismissing a circulating document as fabricated disinformation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government rejected claims that it has established a multi-agency task force under a programme dubbed "ADP4VIP" (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons).
The alleged task force, purportedly coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser and involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), is said to aim at aggressively pursuing prominent opposition figures without due process.
The government described the document as "baseless" and a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation, particularly targeting activities within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). It emphasised that no such programme exists."
The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is firmly focused on implementing economic reforms, combating insecurity, expanding trade, and restoring investor confidence," the statement read.
It accused certain opposition elements of portraying legitimate accountability measures as political persecution to evade scrutiny by anti-corruption agencies.
Reaffirming its commitment to democracy, the government highlighted Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of association and assembly.
It noted President Tinubu's track record as a democrat and his oath to uphold constitutional protections.
The statement stressed adherence to the rule of law, due process, and institutional independence, urging Nigerians to reject disinformation, especially with the 2027 elections approaching.
"The public should anticipate an increase in fabricated narratives and political blackmail," it warned. As the year ends, the government pledged to remain undistracted, prioritising progress and tangible results for citizens.
This denial comes amid ongoing tensions, with opposition groups previously raising concerns over perceived selective anti-corruption efforts, though no independent verification of the alleged "ADP4VIP" document has emerged.
