FG Orders Takedown of Terrorists Social Media Accounts

The Federal Government has revealed that Nigerian security agencies are actively partnering with major social media platforms to identify and remove accounts operated by terrorists and criminal groups for propaganda, fundraising, and coordination of attacks.

Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, Director-General of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) under the Office of the National Security Adviser, disclosed this during an end-of-year briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

He highlighted that platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and X (formerly Twitter) have been exploited by terrorist groups to publicise operations, flaunt looted items, communicate with supporters, and even livestream activities.

"If you knew how many accounts we took down. We have had several meetings with these social media platforms," Laka stated, emphasising successful takedowns that have curtailed such visibility.

The NCTC chief noted that terrorists are evolving tactics by using aliases, unverified profiles, and anonymous accounts, prompting security agencies to continuously adapt countermeasures through ongoing engagements with the tech companies.

Laka also addressed broader challenges, including terror financing via ransom payments often routed through point-of-sale (POS) operators, leading to arrests, prosecutions, and asset seizures.

He linked worsening insecurity to regional instability following coups in Sahel countries, pledging Nigeria's leadership role in West Africa while assuring intensified efforts in 2026.

The initiative aligns with global standards on countering terrorism financing and online extremism, as security agencies strengthen both digital and physical operations to deny terrorists safe spaces online.
