Nigeria has officially launched its Third National Action Plan (NAP III) on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325), marking a significant milestone in promoting women's roles in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and national security.
The plan, covering 2024–2028, reinforces the government's dedication to protecting women and girls while empowering them as central actors in fostering sustainable peace. It aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing inclusion, stability, and progress.
The launch event took place at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja, where First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, represented by Hajia Laila Barau (wife of the Deputy Senate President), highlighted the initiative as a pivotal step toward a more inclusive nation.
She noted that the plan builds on Nigeria's previous action plans and responds to the global recognition, 25 years ago in UNSCR 1325, that women must be active participants in peace and security processes.
Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, hailed the launch as a "historic milestone," coinciding with key anniversaries: 30 years of the Beijing Platform for Action, 25 years of UNSCR 1325, and three decades of the ministry itself.
She stressed that NAP III places women, children, and vulnerable groups at the core of national stability, urging collective efforts for its successful implementation.A key highlight was the inauguration of the National Technical Working Committee on Women, Peace and Security, tasked with coordinating, monitoring, and localizing the plan across Nigeria's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The five pillars of NAP III include prevention and disaster preparedness, participation and representation, protection and prosecution, crisis management with early recovery, and partnerships for coordination.
Stakeholders, including development partners like UN Women, commended the inclusive process and pledged support for turning commitments into tangible action.
