FG Halts Enforcement of NAFDAC's Sachet Alcohol Ban

The Federal Government has ordered an immediate suspension of all enforcement actions related to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)'s proposed ban on alcoholic beverages in sachets and PET bottles of 200ml or less.

The directive comes from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), following a letter dated November 13, 2025, from the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control.

The committee, through its Deputy Chairman, Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, highlighted previous National Assembly resolutions on the issue and called for caution in implementing the ban.

In a statement, the OSGF emphasized its role in coordinating government policies and stated that the matter is under active review.

"All decisions, actions, or enforcement related to the proposed sachet alcohol ban [must] be put on hold pending the conclusion of consultations and the issuance of a final directive," the office said.

It further warned that any enforcement measures taken by NAFDAC or other agencies without clearance from the OSGF would be considered "null and void" and should be ignored by the public until a formal decision is announced.

The review process is examining a range of factors, including legislative directives, public health risks, economic impacts on manufacturers and jobs, and the overall national interest.

Stakeholders and the public will be informed once a final position is reached. The proposed ban, rooted in a 2018 agreement aimed at curbing alcohol misuse, particularly among youth had been set for full enforcement by the end of 2025, but ongoing debates over its socioeconomic consequences have led to this latest pause.
