FEC Approves 4,000 Telecom Towers to Bridge Digital Divide in Underserved Communities

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Bola Tinubu, has approved the deployment of 4,000 telecommunications towers across Nigeria to extend digital connectivity to millions of citizens in underserved and unserved areas.

Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the initiative is a joint effort between the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the Ministry of Finance.

“The FEC granted approval for the establishment of service centres for agricultural mechanisation and the digital economy, specifically targeting the deployment of towers to places that are currently underserved,” Idris stated.

He revealed that approximately 23 million Nigerians currently lack basic digital access, severely limiting their ability to participate in the modern economy and even carry out simple communications.

“Many of our people in remote communities cannot do anything digitally because they are completely cut off,” the minister noted, adding that the lack of connectivity has hampered economic inclusion and contributed to insecurity in some areas.“

Indeed, this will help in fighting insecurity and enhancing commerce and economic activity amongst the people of Nigeria,” he said.

The council also approved the creation of agricultural mechanisation service centres across the country’s geopolitical zones to support all-year-round farming and boost food security.

Idris emphasised that the decisions align with the government’s Medium-Term Expenditure Framework earlier presented by the Ministers of Finance and Budget and National Planning, reflecting a deliberate focus on prioritising high-impact infrastructure projects.
