Ekiti Cargo Airport Begins Commercial Flights After N49.8bn Investment

The Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport has officially commenced commercial flight operations, marking a major milestone for the state’s infrastructure development.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji inaugurated the facility on Tuesday, describing it as a “new chapter” in Ekiti’s journey toward becoming a modern, prosperous state.

The project, first conceived under former Governor Segun Oni, saw land acquisition under Ayodele Fayose and construction begin during Kayode Fayemi’s administration in 2019.

Oyebanji’s government completed the remaining works.Speaking at the event, Oyebanji revealed that the state has spent a total of N49.77 billion on the airport.

The Fayemi administration invested N14 billion, while his government committed over N34 billion to finish critical components including the terminal building, runway strip, perimeter fencing, firefighting facilities, airfield lighting, and specialised aviation equipment.

A second firefighting truck has been acquired, and an aviation fuel depot is being constructed through a public-private partnership with REEF Energy Service Limited.

The governor gave special recognition to legal icon Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, for donating navigational aids worth $1.6 million and constructing a 100-car park valued at nearly N357 million.

President Bola Tinubu was also commended for federal support that enabled the state to finance and complete the project.

John Zhao, Executive Director of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) Nigeria, hailed the airport as a regional aviation hub that connects Ekiti to the global network.

With its 3.2km runway and cargo focus, the airport is expected to boost agro-allied exports, attract investment, and enhance economic activities across Ekiti and neighbouring states.
