An eight-month-old baby and a woman have died following a collision involving two commercial buses on Ikorodu Road in Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said
the accident occurred on Sunday morning opposite Olabode House, between Anthony
and Obanikoro.
According to the agency, a red Tata commercial bus
travelling from Palmgroove towards Anthony reportedly lost control, crossed the
median barrier and rammed into a Volkswagen commercial bus heading towards
Palmgroove.
LASTMA said the woman died on the spot, while the
eight-month-old baby later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
The agency added that 10 other persons, including the
drivers of both vehicles, sustained varying degrees of injuries and were
rescued from the scene.
It said six passengers were evacuated from the Volkswagen
bus, while four others were rescued from the Tata bus.
LASTMA officials, with support from members of the public,
cordoned off the area and evacuated the wrecked vehicles to prevent further
accidents and restore traffic flow on the expressway.
The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) conveyed the
injured victims to nearby hospitals for treatment, while officials of the State
Environmental Health Monitoring Unit evacuated the bodies of the deceased.
The agency said police officers from the Ilupeju division
provided security during the rescue operation.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, general manager of LASTMA, expressed
his condolences to the families of the deceased, particularly the mother of the
infant, who also sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical care.
He warned motorists, especially commercial drivers, against
speeding and urged them to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before plying
Lagos roads.
