EFCC Arrests Five Herbalists with $3.43 Million, €280,000 Counterfeit Notes in Osun

Operatives from the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a five-member syndicate of herbalists for alleged fraud involving massive counterfeit foreign currency.

The suspects, Akingbola Omotayo, Adeola Funsho Ogunrinde, Yahaya Amodu, Kubratu Babalola Olaitan (female), and Familola Sunday Olaitan, were apprehended on December 7 and 8, 2025, at their shrines in Osun and Lagos States following intensive surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Investigations revealed that the group allegedly defrauded victims, including one Halima Sanni who lost N26,550,000, by promising spiritual cleansing, solutions to ailments, and the ability to conjure money through supernatural means.

The syndicate reportedly hypnotized victims into providing funds for "spiritual sacrifices" needed to "clean" conjured currency notes by a genie before they could be spent.

Recovered from the suspects were counterfeit notes totaling $3,430,000 (Three Million, Four Hundred and Thirty Thousand US Dollars) and €280,000 (Two Hundred and Eighty Thousand Euros), along with two exotic vehicles and mobile phones.

The EFCC stated that the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

The arrests highlight ongoing efforts to curb fraud schemes exploiting traditional beliefs in Nigeria.
