The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Dickson Akon, the commandant of the Nigeria Peace Corps, and Omolala Aminat Ahmed, the organisation’s director of finance, before a high court in Abuja on charges of criminal conspiracy and misappropriation.
The duo appeared before Justice H. B. Yusuf on Thursday,
facing a two-count charge bordering on the alleged diversion of funds meant for
a contract to supply badges to the paramilitary-style corps.
According to the charge sheet, the first count accuses Akon
and Ahmed of conspiring in 2024 to carry out criminal misappropriation.
“That you, Dickson Akon and Omolola Aminat Ahmed in the year
2024 at Abuja, FCT, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did agree
among yourselves to do an illegal act, to wit criminal misappropriation and
thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 96 of the penal code laws
of the FCT,” Count One reads.
The second count alleges that they dishonestly converted N46
million out of the N60 million allocated for the badge supply contract to their
personal use.
“That you, Dickson Akon and Omolola Aminat Ahmed in the year
2024 at Abuja, FCT, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court did agree
among yourselves and dishonestly converted to your personal use the sum of N46,
000, 000, 00, (Forty Six Million Naira only) out of the sum of N60.000.000.00,
(Sixty Million Naira, only) meant for the execution of contract for the supply
of badges,” count two reads.
The offences are said to contravene Section 308 of the Penal
Code.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they
were read to them in court.
Khalid Sanusi, prosecution counsel, urged the court to
remand the defendants pending trial, but their lawyer, Emmanuel Agabi, applied
for bail.
The presiding judge granted the application, admitting Akon
and Ahmed to bail in the sum of N5 million each, with two sureties in like sum.
The judge adjourned the matter till February 25, 2026.
