The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arraigned Magistrate Mohammed Suleiman Kumo of Chief Magistrate Court Pantami before Justice H.H. Kereng of the Gombe State High Court on three counts of bribery and extortion totalling ₦1.4 million.

The charges allege that Kumo received the illicit payments through Zenith Bank account 2273938871 belonging to Adamu Ahmed, a registrar attached to his court.

Two of the counts specifically state that on or about November 11, 2024, the magistrate collected ₦1 million and ₦400,000 respectively as gratification, offences contrary to Section 10(a)(i)(ii) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.

Kumo pleaded not guilty to all charges.Prosecuting counsel Abubakar Aliyu prayed the court to fix a trial date and remand the defendant in Gombe Correctional Centre, while defence counsel Adamu Bawa moved an oral application for bail.

Justice Kereng granted the magistrate interim bail, noting that he had earlier been on administrative bail by the EFCC and appeared in court from home rather than custody.

The case was adjourned to January 13 and 14, 2026, for ruling on the formal bail application and commencement of hearing.
