‘Deeply troubling’ — Muhammad Jibrin condemns assault on Gombe councillor

Muhammad Jibrin, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Gombe, has condemned the assault meted on Abdulrahman Abubakar Sheriff, the councillor representing Shamaki ward in the state.

The attack occurred on December 15, at about 4:00pm, along Science 2 Road, Federal Lowcost area, after the councillor reportedly criticised the chief of staff to the governor.

In the viral video, the councillor could be seen seated on his motorcycle when he was accosted and repeatedly slapped, punched, and humiliated in broad daylight.

In a statement issued amid widespread outrage over the incident, Jibrin described the attack as “deeply troubling, unacceptable”, and a violation of democratic principles and human dignity.

Jibrin, who is now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said violence has no place in the politics of the state.

He demanded an impartial investigation, arrest and prosecution of those responsible, and clear accountability to restore public trust.

The Gombe government has responded by “activating internal mechanisms”, stating that the act was personal and not officially sanctioned, while reaffirming its zero tolerance for violence.
