Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has committed to a sweeping reform of the Nigerian Army's training programs, operational strategies, and administrative structures to better counter emerging security challenges and embody his leadership vision.
The pledge came during his remarks at the closing ceremony of the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2025 on Thursday.
The event drew top military brass, including Principal Staff Officers from Defence and Army Headquarters, Corps and Theatre Commanders, General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders, and leaders of various Army institutions.
Shaibu described the conference as an essential forum for evaluating the Army's performance in operations and administration throughout 2025, while laying groundwork for improvements in the year ahead.
"The intensive discussions over the past few days on administration, training, and operations have been highly productive," he noted.
He highlighted that the conference's outcomes pointed to the urgent need for reforms to build a more professional, flexible, battle-ready, and durable force one equipped to thrive in joint operations and multi-agency settings.
Key initiatives include a comprehensive review of training curricula across all Nigerian Army institutions, led by Army Headquarters' Department of Training, with a focus on practical, mission-oriented exercises.
"My vision for a complete revamp of our training programs will be formalized, as effective, realistic training is key to success on the battlefield," Shaibu emphasized.
He also announced increased investment in the development and deployment of Special Forces and Army Aviation units to boost operational effectiveness.
Briefings on intelligence and field updates during the conference illustrated the growing sophistication of threats in Nigeria's security landscape.
"This changing array of dangers demands stronger capabilities in intelligence gathering, surveillance, target acquisition, reconnaissance, and cyber warfare," the COAS stated.
He called for ongoing adaptation, learning, and innovation amid regional unrest and evolving global warfare trends.
In closing, Shaibu thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for ongoing backing, particularly in acquiring military equipment and praised attendees for their valuable input, calling it unprecedented.
