A newly unveiled biography of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari has exposed a thwarted attempt by close aides to rig the 2022 All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries by forging directives to security agencies, in a bid to install then-Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the consensus candidate.
The details emerge from the 600-page book, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, authored by Dr. Charles Omole and launched on December 15, 2025, at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in attendance.
According to the book, aides allegedly sent fake presidential orders on the eve of the convention to top security officials, including the then-Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba, the DSS Director-General, and the NIA chief, instructing them to deploy forces to enforce Lawan's selection.
The plot unravelled when IGP Alkali Baba rejected the directives, consulted colleagues, and sought direct confirmation from Buhari.
The late president denied any involvement, stating he had no preferred candidate and that delegates should choose freely without interference.
Buhari is said to have laughed upon learning that Lawan's supporters had begun celebrating the purported endorsement, firmly reiterating: "I have not anointed anyone. Nigerians should choose, and the security agencies must not interfere."
The biography highlights this episode as proof of Buhari's democratic integrity and resistance to misusing state power for political ends.It also covers other Villa intrigues, including the 2018 sacking of former DSS boss Lawal Daura and a family incident involving gunfire.
At the launch, President Tinubu lauded the book for capturing Buhari's legacy of discipline, integrity, and respect for democratic processes.
